History and origin of amulets in different cultures

Amulets have been a part of humanity since time immemorial, used as objects believed to have magical or protective properties. Throughout history, different cultures have developed their own amulets and beliefs around them. In this article we will explore the history and origin of amulets in some of the most prominent cultures.

History and origin of amulets in different cultures

In ancient Greece, amulets were known as «apotropaic», that is, objects that had the power to ward off bad luck or harm.

The Greeks used to wear eye-shaped amulets, known as the «eye of Horus», to protect themselves from envy and the evil eye.

Amulets in the shape of horseshoes, four-leaf clovers and figures of animals such as the owl were also used, considered a symbol of wisdom and protection.

In ancient Rome, amulets were an important part of everyday life. Amulets in the form of animal figures, such as dolphins and fish, were believed to protect people from the dangers of the sea. They were also believed in the protection of key-shaped amulets, which symbolized the opening of new paths and opportunities.

In Chinese culture, amulets have been a fundamental part of tradition for centuries. The Chinese believed in protective amulets in the form of Chinese coins, gold ingots and dragon figures, which represented good fortune, wealth and protection against evil spirits. Amulets in the form of jade were also used, considered a sacred stone with protective and healing properties.

In Egyptian culture, amulets were an essential part of religious and funerary practices. The Egyptians believed in protective amulets in the shape of scarabs, which symbolized resurrection and protection against the evils of the afterlife. Amulets in the shape of the eye of Horus, ankh (symbol of eternal life) and the ring of Ra, which represented the protection of the sun god, were also used.

Over the centuries, amulets have evolved and taken on different forms and meanings in different cultures, but their fundamental purpose has always been the same: to protect those who wear them and provide them with strength and good fortune on their path.
